Bluehost.com Blues

October 22nd, 2007 · 20 Comments

As some of you may have noticed, my site has been down lately. A lot.

In fact, it’s been down almost the entire day today, most of yesterday, and a huge part of Friday and Saturday as well.

I have been a fan of bluehost.com up to this point, and I’m willing to give them another chance, but my patience level has come down significantly. I’m not an expert, but if you’re a hosting company, outages of 30 hours or more should never happen. Never.

Anyway, I apologize that the site’s been down, and if you sent me an email, you’ll have to send it again.

Business as usual tomorrow, I hope!

Glad things are up and running again!

Yeah, I’ve been by several times and was getting nowhere, until now. Hope you solve it soon!

@MyStarbucks– Thanks! I was pulling my hair out. Incredibly frustrating…

@Working Girl– I know. That might be the worst part of it. I had just spent a couple hours visiting new sites and leaving comments, but anyone that took interest (like yourself) found a dead site when trying to visit. Thanks for the well wishes. I think it’s better now, but if the site goes down, you’ll know what’s going on : /

Wow, that’s a looong time for site to be down. Glad it’s up and running again (I did try to access your site yesterday or it might’ve been early morning today).

I almost chose Bluehost for my self-hosted wordpress site, but I got a recommendation by a blogger friend’s valued opinion and chose Siteground instead.

Either way, hope it doesn’t happen again! =)

Your header with the folder tabs is AWESOME. Keep up the good work Mr. Chuck!

Wow. Good to know. I was just considering getting an account with them for a small project I was working on. 30 hour is not acceptable under *any* circumstances. I guess they won’t be getting my business…

    Thanks for letting us know.

Huh. I have Bluehost too and haven’t had issues. They must be picking on you ;)

    Hope it’s resolved soon.

@Joanne– I might be asking you about Siteground down the road. At this point, I’m just thankful the site is up and running again.

@Bush Mackel– Thanks pal. All credit goes to Hannah and Jason on that one. I love ‘em (the banners and the people).

@JR– They said it was a denial of service attack and that it was beyond their control and that they were working on it. That said, it seemed to take too long to fix. Any time your site is down, time seems to crawl, so maybe I was over anxious about it.

The odd thing is that it was up and down and up and down. As I understand denial of service attacks, that makes some sense. Oh well.

@Rebecca– Actually, my first comical thought on the situation was that Deloitte put their goons on me after that recent article ; )

Bluehost is great, really, other than this issue (that’s a major flaw, though). Inexpensive, huge bandwidth amounts, great tools server side, etc.. What happened to your website the other day when all the posts disappeared, by the way?

That stinks! Sorry to hear you’re having so much trouble. I was in your position a month ago though. My host kept having numerous problems that went on for about three weeks. They provided very good support and great service up to that point so I tried to give them as long as I could, but in the end I had to switch.

I feel you, Chuck! Normally WP alerts me to comments and I was feeling like no-one liked my post. Yeah, um, four comments, nice, long ones, including one alerting me to a typo IN MY HEADLINE came in within an hour of my post going live today and I didn’t get them until 8 hours later. Not cool. I feel your pain.

  • 11 Naomi Dunford // Oct 22, 2007 at 10:09 pm

    P.S. Loving the header.

  • 12 Chuck Westbrook // Oct 22, 2007 at 10:17 pm

@Deron Sizemore– Thanks, man. I appreciate it. I almost feel cheated on because I was so happy with what they’d been doing. Like I said, they get another chance. I believe in love.

@Naomi– You DO feel my pain. What was the typo? I loved your post, and I was just reading it and about to send you an email to that effect rather than post yet another adulatory comment on your site.

P.S. Thanks! Hannah does great work. There are 9 of them in total!

  • 13 Naomi Dunford // Oct 22, 2007 at 10:29 pm

I said “Entrepreneur’s” instead of “Entrepreneurs”. This would normally not be a problem except I was ranting my ass off earlier about a.) bad headlines, and b.) typos. Oh, that and I’m a COPYWRITER.

And comment! Email! I love it all! (Now with the exclamation marks, too? I should fire me.)

I meant to mention this too, http://www.siteuptime.com

I started using them when my host started having trouble. It seemed like whenever I tried to access my site, it was down and I could only access it maybe three times a day, so I wondered how many other hours throughout the day was it down? This will tell you. It’s a good free service.

    Good luck.

Hm. Good to know. I’ve been looking at a hosting company and I almost bought Blue Host the other day. Guess you get what you pay for? But this suprises me because they’re endorsed by WordPress, no? Guess it’s back to the drawing board unless things improve. Keep me posted!

  • 16 Chuck Westbrook // Oct 23, 2007 at 11:13 am

@Naomi– Well, if you do fire yourself, I’m accepting copywriting gigs ; )

@Deron Sizemore– I’d never seen that site until I was in the midst of my crisis this weekend, but it’s a good thing to know about. You can’t always monitor your website (nor should you have to), but you still want to know.

@Tiffany– The awful thing is that they’re so good in so many other ways… I’ve really enjoyed using them for the most part. Oh well.

I use Pair, they seem to be reliable. Sorry to hear your host is being spotty.

    […] October 22nd outage. here and […]

  • 19 Ray Dotson // Oct 25, 2007 at 3:45 pm

That sucks! I’m on Bluehost, too, and I’ve noticed a lot of slowdowns lately, but no outages. A few months ago there were some brief times when my site was down, though. Growing pains?

  • 20 Chuck Westbrook // Oct 26, 2007 at 10:36 am

@Ray– They are certainly growingquckly, so I’m guessing that’s what’s happening.
